For transliteration of Bulgarian letters I have followed the system used by the editors of Slavic and East European Journal. Most Bulgarian letters are pronounced as in English except for the following.

J, j Й, й pronounced y as in yes

S, s С, с pronounced s as in soon

U, u У, у pronounced oo as in broom

C, c Ц, ц pronounced tz as in quartz

Č, č Ч, ч pronounced ch as in church

Š, š Ш, ш pronounced sh as in should

Št, št Щ, щ pronounced shed as in washed

Ǔ, ǔ Ъ, ъ pronounced u as in urgent

Ju, ju Ю, ю pronouned you as in youth (but shorter)

Ja, ja Я, я pronounced ya as in yard (but shorter)

Most Turkish letters are pronounced as in English except for the following:

C, c pronounced j as in jam

ğ (soft g) not pronounced; serves to lengthen slightly the preceding vowel

İ, i pronounced u as in urgent

J, j pronounced j as in the French jolie

Ö, ö pronounced ö as in the German könig

Ş, ş pronounced sh as in ship

Ü, ü pronounced u as in the French tu
